Pope Francis is currently in a critical but stable condition as he battles double pneumonia, according to a recent update from the Vatican. Despite being 88 years old and receiving treatment in hospital, the Pope’s blood parameters have remained stable, allowing him to continue his work. A follow-up CAT scan has been conducted, although the results were not immediately available. Fortunately, he has not encountered any new respiratory crises, and his prognosis continues to be cautiously optimistic.

On Tuesday, he resumed his duties after receiving the Eucharist, demonstrating his commitment to his responsibilities even while hospitalised. Earlier, he held a meeting with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to review new decrees for potential saints, suggesting that operational matters within the Vatican are proceeding despite the Pope’s health situation. This meeting was the first of its kind since his hospitalisation on February 14.

During this audience, Pope Francis approved decrees for the canonisation of two new saints and initiated the beatification process for five individuals, which is the first step towards sainthood. He also expressed intentions to convene a consistory focused on future canonisations, signalling that he remains forward-thinking in his leadership role.

Speculation regarding potential resignation has circulated since the Pope’s hospitalisation; however, the Vatican’s officials have downplayed such discussions, emphasising the importance of prioritising his health. While Francis has indicated that should he resign, he would prefer to be known as the ’emeritus bishop of Rome’ rather than emeritus pope, it appears he remains determined to fulfil his papal duties as long as he is able.

Giovanna Chirri, a reporter who covered the consistory where now-retired Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation, believes it is unlikely that Francis will follow a similar path, stating that the church needs him to continue in his role. In addition to meetings, the Vatican has released recent communications from the Pope, including messages for Lent and new appointments for bishops and archbishops, further exhibiting his ongoing involvement and leadership.

The Pope has expressed plans to reside in Rome if he ever chooses to resign, ensuring a distinct separation from the previous precedent set by Benedict. Additionally, he has composed a letter of resignation to be activated if he becomes incapacitated.

Overall, while the Pope’s health remains a concern, he is still actively engaged in critical theological and administrative affairs from his hospital room, underscoring his dedication to the Catholic Church and its faithful.
