A tense police standoff in Perth unfolded dramatically when a man drove his Jeep off Claremont Jetty into the water around 9 am. A police vehicle was deployed to block his exit, marking the beginning of a complex situation that involved numerous officers, including negotiators and the Tactical Response Group, with a helicopter circling overhead.
During the ordeal, the driver exhibited erratic behaviour, shouting at onlookers and police while revving the engine of his vehicle. Witness Cathy Greatrex described the scene as unsettling, noting the driver’s aggressive actions. As the situation escalated, the man’s mother arrived to observe attempts by officers to persuade him to surrender.
Police had already attempted to restrict the Jeep’s movement by deploying spike strips and positioning their vehicles strategically on the jetty. However, the driver rammed his vehicle into a parked police car, causing damage.
Just after midday, the situation reached a climactic point when the driver reversed and his vehicle teetered at the edge of the jetty. He then accelerated forward, launching the Jeep into the Swan River. Officers quickly converged on the scene as the driver resurfaced and clambered onto the overturned vehicle before diving back into the water.
With weapons drawn, law enforcement surrounded him, and he was soon rescued by the Tactical Response Group. He was subsequently transported to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for examination, although initial reports indicated his injuries were not severe. As of now, he remains under police guard at the hospital, and no charges have been filed against him.
The motives behind the standoff remain unclear, but prior incidents involving the Jeep were reported, including a witness who described the driver careening into her rubbish bin before the standoff began.
As the aftermath of this troubling incident unfolds, authorities continue to assess the circumstances leading to the dramatic events at Claremont Jetty.
