A 50-year-old woman from the United States has been charged with importing 17 kilograms of methamphetamine into Australia. The incident occurred upon her arrival at Sydney Airport from San Francisco when she reported her luggage had gone missing. Meanwhile, a suitcase with her surname was found at the baggage claim area and reported to the Australian Border Force (ABF) by airline personnel.
Upon examination, officers discovered vacuum-sealed bags containing a white crystalline substance hidden within packing cubes inside the suitcase. Preliminary tests indicated the substance tested positive for methamphetamine, culminating in a total weight of 17 kilograms. The woman was subsequently arrested and charged with the importation of a commercial quantity of a controlled drug.
ABF officials emphasised their collaborative efforts with law enforcement and airport staff to detect and intercept potential threats. Superintendent Elle West highlighted the importance of vigilance, reminding travellers that the ABF actively watches for suspicious behaviour. She warned that any attempts to smuggle illicit drugs into Australia would be met with rigorous scrutiny and action.
