A US man, Craig Manders, is suing the tour company African Portfolio after his wife, Lisa Manders, was fatally injured in a hippo attack during a safari in Zambia last June. While on a guided walk, Lisa, 70, was attacked by a hippo that emerged from the water, leading to severe injuries that resulted in her death shortly thereafter. The lawsuit, filed in Stamford, Connecticut, claims that the company failed to ensure safety, properly screen guides, and supervise the tour, as the guides allegedly did not intervene during the attack.

Manders’ attorney, Paul Slager, argues that established safety standards were not adhered to, resulting in devastating consequences. The lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary damages and accountability for the tragedy. Craig Manders is reportedly struggling with severe emotional distress from witnessing his wife’s death.

African Portfolio has denied the allegations, stating they merely arranged the trip and emphasising that the guides provided by Chiawa Safaris were trained professionals. They claim all necessary safety measures were enforced prior to the incident and have expressed condolences to the family. The case highlights the inherent dangers of safari tours and the responsibility companies have to ensure the safety of their guests in unpredictable wildlife environments.
