A 42-year-old man, Bradford Gille from Afton, Michigan, has been arrested following a violent incident at a Walmart in Traverse City, where he allegedly stabbed 11 individuals at random. He is facing charges of terrorism and multiple counts of assault with intent to murder. The attack’s motive is currently unknown, according to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea.
Gille has a history of prior assaults and controlled substance violations, and he was somewhat uncooperative during his arrest. The attack occurred on a Saturday afternoon, with emergency calls received just after he began his assault, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement, who arrived within minutes. Bystanders played a notable role in subduing Gille in the store’s parking lot before police could arrive.
The diverse group of victims, whose ages ranged from 29 to 84, included a Walmart employee. Initial reports indicated that patients treated at Munson Medical Centre consisted of one individual in serious condition while others were in fair to good condition, with all expected to survive.
Sheriff Shea commended the quick intervention of bystanders and the rapid police response, suggesting their actions likely prevented further injuries. Meanwhile, Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg emphasised that the terrorism charge reflects the broader impact of the assault on the community rather than just the individual victims.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and frightening. One bystander reported observing Gille stabbing a woman in the throat, sparking a rapid response from other shoppers in the parking lot, some of whom were armed. The unfolding incident left many feeling disbelief and fear, akin to a scene from a movie.
While the motive remains unclear, authorities confirmed that the attack seemed random, with Gille not targeting specific individuals. Walmart expressed its commitment to cooperating with law enforcement and indicated that associates would be compensated during the ongoing closure of the store, which has yet to reopen. The FBI has also pledged to provide support as required.
The incident has shaken the local community of around 16,000 residents along Lake Michigan, drawing attention and concern about safety in public spaces.
