The Australian government has issued urgent warnings for citizens in Nepal in light of violent protests against the government’s attempts to regulate social media, which resulted in police opening fire on demonstrators. This unrest has led to at least 17 fatalities and over 145 injuries. The protests were triggered by new legislation that aims to regulate platforms such as Facebook, X, and YouTube, which officials claim had failed to register and comply with government oversight.

The protests centred around the Parliament building, drawing tens of thousands of demonstrators who pushed through barricades, resulting in clashes with riot police. The persistent unrest has prompted the government to impose curfews around key areas, including the Parliament and presidential residence, as tensions remain high.

On its Smartraveller website, the Australian government has advised travellers in Nepal to adhere strictly to curfews and to stay away from areas affected by protests. They have also recommended seeking alternative communication methods due to restrictions on popular social media services like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

The government’s proposed social media regulation, intended to ensure responsible management by these platforms, has been met with criticism. Activists claim it represents an effort to suppress dissent and curb free expression. Notably, protests resounded with chants for the government to tackle corruption instead of restricting social media. Many participants identified as part of Gen Z, a demographic predominantly born between 1995 and 2010.

The Nepali populace has voiced anger over the ban on various social media platforms that occurred last week after numerous companies failed to register with the government. Rights advocates have described these developments as a blatant effort to control public discourse, citing concerns over freedom of expression. Some social media platforms, such as TikTok, have managed to comply with local regulations to continue operations in the country.

The recent violence during protests, with many individuals exhibiting severe wounds, including gunshot injuries, has heightened calls for justice. As families anxiously awaited news of loved ones in Kathmandu, the mood remained tense, with the risk of civil unrest poised to affect tourism and general safety in the region.

As Nepal’s situation evolves, the Australian government stresses the importance of remaining alert and adapting to the unpredictable nature of the current climate, both regarding public safety and communication methods.
