Josh Inglis has expressed uncertainty about his specific role in Australia’s Test series against the West Indies, set to begin this week. After his stellar debut where he scored a century against Sri Lanka earlier this year, Inglis was not selected for the World Test Championship final against South Africa. Recently, however, selectors dropped Marnus Labuschagne and, due to an injury to Steve Smith, Inglis has been called up for the Caribbean tour.
Inglis acknowledged the positive aspect of receiving early notice about his inclusion, allowing him time to prepare for the conditions in Barbados. He noted, “You never really know,” referring to his inclusion, but recognised that Smith’s injury opened a door for him. He mentioned that chief selector George Bailey had informed him of the selection at the start of the week, providing him with ample time to get ready.
There remains some ambiguity for Inglis concerning where he will fit within the batting order, especially with established players like Cameron Green and Travis Head competing for top and middle-order positions. Regarding this uncertainty, he stated, “Not too sure yet,” indicating that the team will finalise the line-up in the days leading up to the match. He is comfortable adapting to different batting positions, as he’s used to moving around within the order.
As Australia contemplates their playing XI for the first Test, reports suggest that a dual-spin attack could be necessary due to potential conditions at Kensington Oval, which might dry out and change over the five days. This adjustment could lead the selection committee to include both Matt Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon in the line-up, adding depth to their bowling attack. The inclusion of Beau Webster as an all-rounder would offer further flexibility to the team composition. Consequently, either Josh Hazlewood or Mitchell Starc might be omitted from the squad.
Despite uncertainties in his role and the overall team formation, Inglis remains optimistic and ready to contribute as Australia prepares to face the West Indies. The anticipated batting order for the first Test is likely to feature Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood (or Mitchell Starc), Nathan Lyon, and Matt Kuhnemann.
