Red Bull Racing’s team principal, Laurent Mekies, has acknowledged that the team’s recent efforts to compete with McLaren in late 2025 have negatively impacted their performance at the start of the 2026 season. Currently positioned sixth in the F1 standings, Red Bull is struggling to keep pace with traditional rivals Mercedes and Ferrari, a stark contrast to their previous dominance in the sport.
In a discussion on F1’s podcast Beyond the Grid, Mekies noted that redirecting their focus to the 2026 season felt like a "wishful thinking" approach. He stressed the importance of understanding the limitations they faced in 2025, stating that the efforts made last year have indeed influenced their current struggles. While he expressed dissatisfaction with their starting position, he refused to use this situation as an excuse, maintaining that they will navigate these challenges.
He pointed out the complexities of the previous season’s car, which did not meet performance expectations, and the additional pressure of having a new leader mid-season. With new regulations and power unit projects on the horizon for 2026, Mekies believed that many in the team saw the merit in prioritising a long-term strategy instead of a quick fix. Despite the anticipated repercussions of their late push last year, the team’s commitment to resolving the underlying issues has been commendable.
Drivers have been forthcoming about the mood within the Red Bull camp, with Isack Hadjar recognising the team’s collective resolve to improve. Meanwhile, reigning champion Max Verstappen has voiced profound discontent with the current season, labelling it "anti-racing" and lamenting that it’s akin to "Formula E on steroids." He has even hinted at the possibility of retiring if performance does not improve, as the team only accumulated 16 points in the first three races.
Despite these challenges, Red Bull’s leadership is resolute in their strategy, framing their current situation not as a transition year, but as a period of intense effort to recuperate competitiveness. Mekies expressed confidence that the team, characterised by its fervent work ethic, is diligently focused on enhancing their vehicle’s performance to surpass their competitors.
As they confront the difficulties of this season, Red Bull is prioritising Verstappen’s championship aspirations, especially given his close finish to McLaren’s Lando Norris last year. The team is determined to ensure that they do not fall into a transition phase and have stressed that they are in "full attack mode" to recover and innovate. Mekies reinforced the notion that there is a palpable drive among team members in Milton Keynes to swiftly return to a position of competitiveness in the sport.
