Kyle Flanagan has received accolades from rugby league legend Greg Alexander following his standout performance in St George Illawarra’s impressive 26-8 trial victory against the Roosters on Sunday. The 26-year-old five-eighth not only scored a try but also assisted in two others during the match held at Kogarah Oval, showcasing his talent alongside new halves partner Lachlan Ilias.
Flanagan has faced criticism in the past, but his recent performance has sparked optimism for the upcoming season. Alexander, speaking on SEN Radio, admitted he previously doubted Flanagan’s abilities but now believes he can excel in 2025, highlighting Flanagan’s impressive contributions in just the first half of the trial.
With the departure of former captain Ben Hunt, who dominated playmaking duties last season, Flanagan seems to have found a new lease on life, benefiting from the influence of coach Shane Flanagan. The coach’s guidance appears to have elevated Kyle’s performance, allowing him to thrive without the burden of competition for the playmaker role.
Impressed with Flanagan’s efforts, Alexander noted the strong defensive game shared by both Flanagan and Ilias. As the Dragons prepare for the Charity Shield on Saturday, anticipation builds for their season opener against the Bulldogs on March 8.
