In a recent discussion on Stan Sport, Mark Bosnich expressed his anticipation for an all-English final in European football. This optimism follows significant victories for both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the Europa League semi-finals, which reignited their dreams of clinching a major trophy and securing Champions League qualification.

On Friday, Tottenham achieved a 3-1 home win against the Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, while Manchester United delivered a strong performance, besting Athletic Bilbao 3-0 away at San Mames. Despite their impressive European progress, both teams have struggled in their domestic campaigns, sitting in the lower half of the Premier League table.

Amidst speculation regarding the future of Tottenham’s Australian manager Ange Postecoglou, who may face dismissal due to the team’s poor league form, a potential triumph in Europe could prove pivotal for his tenure.

Tottenham’s goals were scored by Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, and Dominic Solanke, with the second leg set to take place next week on a synthetic pitch in Norway’s Arctic Circle. On the other side, United’s match showcased what could be considered their best performance of the season. They opened the scoring with a Casemiro header in the 30th minute, capitalising on a cross from Harry Maguire. United’s dominance further solidified when Rasmus Hojlund earned a penalty after being fouled by Dani Vivian, who received a red card; Bruno Fernandes successfully converted the penalty, making it 2-0. Fernandes then rounded off the victory with a third goal just before halftime, showcasing United’s attacking prowess.

United’s display could have been more conclusive had it not been for two shots hitting the woodwork by Noussair Mazraoui and Casemiro. The return leg will be held at Old Trafford next Friday, presenting United with a golden opportunity to not only advance to the final but to do so in front of their home supporters, with the final scheduled to take place in Bilbao on May 22 (AEST).

As both teams prepare for their respective second legs, the tantalising prospect of an all-English final hangs in the balance, promising to uplift fans amidst a challenging season.
