Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall expressed uncertainty regarding the future of 20-year-old hooker Tallyn Da Silva before the June 30 transfer deadline. Reports emerged prior to the team’s narrow 16-12 defeat against Canberra that Da Silva had received permission to engage in discussions with other clubs. However, he remained on the bench throughout the match, highlighting the challenge of breaking into the starting lineup, especially with Api Koroisau firmly established as the primary hooker.

Marshall explained that the decision to leave Da Silva off the field was strategic, as the game was close and he wanted to rely on his top players. Despite being contracted until the end of 2026, Da Silva appears eager to explore opportunities elsewhere, particularly in light of limited chances to secure the No.9 jersey with the Tigers.

The Knights recently expressed interest in acquiring Da Silva on loan, although those negotiations reportedly fell through. Other clubs, including the Eels, Souths, and Cowboys, are also interested in signing him. Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson mentioned that while the idea of a temporary transfer for Da Silva was initially appealing, circumstances have changed, leaving the club in a waiting position to see how the situation develops.

“Just because you grant permission to negotiate doesn’t mean a transfer is imminent,” Richardson remarked. The Tigers aim to retain Da Silva, understanding his desire for first-grade playtime.

The Tigers’ recent match showcased some positive developments, with young playmaker Latu Fainu displaying talent and potential as the future five-eighth for the club. Moreover, the team’s defence managed to hold Canberra scoreless in the second half, although Marshall noted that discipline issues, such as unnecessary penalties, continue to plague the squad.

In summary, while Tallyn Da Silva’s current situation remains fluid, it is evident that he is seeking more game time and opportunities to progress his career, amidst a backdrop of mixed performances for the Wests Tigers both on and off the field.
