Siosifa Amone emerged as an unlikely hero in the Waratahs’ thrilling 37-36 victory over the Highlanders, marking the start of their 2025 Super Rugby season. The Waratahs, who finished last in 2024, showcased a revitalised team bolstered by several star signings. Just as it seemed the Highlanders would secure an upset win with Sefo Kautai’s late try, Amone, a 22-year-old making his Waratahs debut, stepped up spectacularly.
Initially an afterthought as Taniela Tupou’s backup, Amone turned the game on its head by scoring two significant late tries—first through a cleverly executed lineout, and then clinching the win on the final siren, showcasing impressive strength and determination. Post-match, he expressed joy, describing the experience as “unreal” and a “dream come true.”
His transformation over the off-season was notable, having shed 25 kilograms, which has enhanced his performance. Angus Bell praised Amone’s tenacity, highlighting the team’s hard work and resilience through a taxing pre-season. Other notable tries for the Waratahs were scored by Rob Leota, Dave Porecki, and Max Jorgensen, while the Highlanders’ Caleb Tangitau scored twice. The Waratahs will enjoy a bye next week, while the Highlanders prepare to face the defending champions, the Blues.
