Two residents from the Gold Coast were taken aback when they stumbled upon a freshwater crocodile on the road in the hinterlands near Mudgreeba. Zane Hemmings, who lives in Austinville, expressed his shock upon discovering the reptile while driving his friend, Lachlan Sainsbury, home.
Upon spotting the crocodile on the road, Zane decided to investigate further. He managed to secure the crocodile and promptly notified the relevant authorities. Wildlife officers soon arrived at the scene to take the creature into their care.
The Department of Environment has launched an investigation into the matter. Officials suspect that the crocodile may have either escaped from a private ownership setting or been unlawfully taken from its natural habitat, an act that could incur a hefty fine of up to $16,000.
