Ukraine has intensified its claims regarding the presence of Chinese nationals fighting for Russia, alleging that over 150 mercenaries have been recruited through social media channels. This assertion has been met with strong denials from Chinese officials, who labelled the allegations as “totally unfounded.” These developments unfold amid ongoing efforts by the US to broker a ceasefire in the protracted conflict, which has spanned more than three years.

In a recent announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported the capture of two Chinese men engaged in combat with Russian forces within Ukraine, marking the first assertion where Ukraine has explicitly mentioned Chinese fighters in the conflict. Following their capture, Zelenskyy expressed a willingness to exchange these two individuals for Ukrainian soldiers detained in Russia. He further claimed that Chinese authorities were aware of Russia’s efforts to recruit nationals from China, although he refrained from suggesting that the Chinese government directly sanctioned their involvement.

Zelenskyy provided details, asserting that the Ukrainian military holds the names and passport information of 155 Chinese citizens purportedly fighting for Russia, with the belief that this number could be higher. He referenced documents containing personal data and details on their recruitment, including arrival dates in Russia and departure for military training, though these documents have not been independently verified.

Since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, China has maintained strong diplomatic ties with Russia, reportedly supplying machinery and microelectronics for weapon production, as well as aiding Russia’s economy through trade in energy and consumer goods.

While there is no indication that China has overtly sent troops or military resources to Russia, US officials have accused Iran of supplying drones and stated that North Korea has sent troops and ammunition to assist Russia on the battlefield. The conflict has evolved into a contest between competing geopolitical blocs, with the US and Europe significantly supporting Ukraine both militarily and diplomatically.

Tensions have escalated between the US and China in recent years, largely stemming from disputes over geopolitical influence, technology, and trade. Recent spikes in tariffs between the two nations have further unsettled global markets. Zelenskyy noted that US officials expressed surprise upon learning about the alleged involvement of Chinese mercenaries in Ukraine.

As discussions around potential resolutions continue, the situation remains fluid as the international community closely monitors the ongoing conflict.
