Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this morning the acceptance of a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States, following significant peace discussions held between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia. Zelenskyy confirmed that this ceasefire would encompass the full front line of conflict with Russia, rather than being limited to aerial and maritime operations.
Zelenskyy remarked that Ukraine views this proposal positively and is prepared to act; however, he emphasised that the ceasefire would take effect once Russia agrees to it. He called on the United States to persuade Moscow to reciprocate. A joint statement from the US and Ukraine highlighted that Kyiv is ready to implement the ceasefire, which could be extended upon mutual consent, pending acceptance by Russia.
Following the talks, the US indicated it would resume intelligence sharing and security aid to Ukraine immediately. The joint statement made it clear that Russian cooperation is essential for peace to be achieved.
In addition to the ceasefire discussions, the two nations aim to finalise a deal concerning rare minerals to bolster Ukraine’s economy and secure its long-term stability. Notably, the discussions lasted over eight hours, reflecting a constructive dialogue despite prior tensions between the two nations.
Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, noted the positive and cooperative atmosphere of the meeting, which aimed at establishing a just and enduring peace. The Ukrainian delegation, absent Zelenskyy himself, engaged closely with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, who had also been involved in earlier negotiations with Russia.
Rubio emphasised the US desire to ascertain Ukraine’s position and any potential concessions they might consider. Yermak, while evading specific details about possible compromises, highlighted the critical importance of security guarantees from the US to prevent future Russian aggression. This remains a primary concern for Ukraine, which seeks assurances to prevent a recurrence of hostilities.
As discussions unfolded, the situation intensified with reports of a significant Ukrainian drone attack on Russia, where Moscow claimed to have shot down numerous drones aimed at various regions, causing casualties.
The meeting marked a pivotal moment for Ukraine and the US, occurring shortly after a period of strained relations following a controversial encounter between Trump and Zelenskyy. Ukraine continues to assert its territorial integrity, resisting any suggestions of ceding land, a stance supported by many of its Western allies, pending definitive security assurances.
As the conflict persists, the geopolitical landscape remains fraught with challenges, but the recent talks signal a tentative step towards a potential ceasefire and renewed diplomatic engagement.
