During the IndyCar race at Gateway near St. Louis on Monday, two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Josef Newgarden experienced a dramatic crash, flipping his car upside down. The incident occurred mid-race when Newgarden collided with Louis Foster after the latter lost control and spun towards the wall. Unable to evade Foster’s path, Newgarden’s car went airborne, damaging the SAFER barrier before landing on its roof and skidding along the track.

Following the crash, the IndyCar safety team quickly assisted Newgarden from his vehicle. He reassured his Team Penske crew over the radio that he was unharmed. Meanwhile, race officials had to right Newgarden’s Chevrolet No. 2 while the race continued under yellow flag conditions for cleanup.

Foster described the incident, stating he experienced a “wiggle” before losing control and felt relief that Newgarden was safe after the collision, which he deemed “pretty scary.”

Upon exiting the medical centre, Newgarden chose not to comment. Earlier in the race, his teammate Will Power also encountered trouble when a punctured tyre led to his car hitting the wall after starting from pole position, leaving Team Penske seeking its first win of the season.

Kyle Kirkwood from Andretti Global emerged victorious, claiming his second consecutive race win and third overall this season. He, along with two-time reigning champion Alex Palou, who currently has five wins, stands as the only winners this season.
