In the midst of a devastating flood in Kerr County, Texas, Julian Ryan’s last words to his mother were a heartfelt “I love you.” In a heroic attempt to save his fiancée, their two young children, and his mother from rising waters that quickly engulfed their trailer home, Ryan shattered a window. Unfortunately, this act of bravery proved fatal, as he severely injured himself on the glass, ultimately leading to his death.
As the floodwaters surged unexpectedly, the region experienced four months’ worth of rain in just a few hours, causing the Guadalupe River to rise over eight metres. Homes, vehicles, and a campsite filled with sleeping children were swept away. In the aftermath, hundreds of people were reported missing, including numerous campers.
Ryan’s sister, Connie Salas, recounted the harrowing moments leading to his death, where he expressed love for his family even as he faced mortality. His mother, holding him as he passed away, felt the unbearable weight of losing her son in such tragic circumstances. Other families in the affected community are similarly grappling with loss.
The floods claimed at least 120 lives, including more than 35 children, spurring widespread mourning as granulating details of the victims emerged. Among them were young girls from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls, which suffered catastrophic damage. Local leaders, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, described the disaster as horrendous.
The tragedy extended to various families. The Harber sisters, aged 13 and 11, were found together, clinging to their rosaries, while young campers like eight-year-old Hadley Hanna showed exuberance for life, highlighted by her mother’s touching tribute.
Chloe Childress, a dedicated camp counsellor, also lost her life while mentoring young girls, reflecting the impact of the floods on local educators and mentors. The community remains in shock, grappling with the loss of significant figures including youth mentors, dedicated parents, and members of the local community.
First responders and families continue to search for answers amidst the ongoing recovery efforts, as the community collectively mourns and supports each other through an unimaginably difficult time. The impact of this disaster will resonate through the heart of Kerr County as families process their grief and begin the journey towards healing.
