Amazon has enhanced its operations in Melbourne by launching two new logistics centres, which promise quicker delivery times for customers. The latest facility, located in Cranbourne West, is designed to accommodate four million items across two levels. Janet Menzies, Amazon’s Asia Pacific director, stated that this marks their first fulfilment centre in Victoria and signifies an expansion of their existing network.
Earlier this month, Amazon opened another centre in Ravenhall, investing a total of $200 million in both sites. However, the company is set to make an even more significant impact with a forthcoming site in Craigieburn, which will be Amazon’s largest warehouse in Australia—five times the size of Federation Square. This new centre is expected to be partially automated and will utilise robotics, similar to Amazon’s facility in Sydney.
Infrastructure Minister Danny Pearson acknowledged the competitive nature of attracting investment, noting that Amazon had numerous options but chose to establish operations in Melbourne due to a conducive environment. The two new centres are expected to create over 700 jobs across various sectors, including IT, HR, and logistics roles such as picking, packing, and shipping.
Menzies reiterated Amazon’s commitment to enhancing the delivery experience for customers by bringing inventory closer to them, thereby improving efficiency. The expansion marks a significant step for Amazon’s logistics capabilities in Victoria, reinforcing their aim to streamline service and meet growing demand from online shoppers.
