A tragic accident has claimed the lives of an innocent motorist and the driver of a stolen vehicle following a head-on collision in Toolern Vale, north-west of Melbourne. The incident unfolded around 10am when highway police, having just concluded an unrelated traffic stop, noted a car speeding past them on a regional road.
The stolen vehicle continued to accelerate along Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road before colliding with an oncoming car. The force of the impact was so severe that both vehicles were propelled several metres apart. Unfortunately, both drivers died at the scene, while a passenger in the stolen car was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries but is in a stable condition.
Local residents have expressed concerns regarding speeding on this particular stretch of road, noting that exceeding the speed limit is a common occurrence. Detective Inspector Craig McEvey described the crash scene as horrific, with debris scattered over a distance of more than 100 metres.
The Major Collision Investigation Unit is conducting a thorough examination of the site, and the identity of the deceased drivers has not yet been confirmed.
