In a stellar display during the State of Origin opener, NSW coach Laurie Daley hailed Payne Haas’s “inspirational” man-of-the-match performance as he propelled the Blues to an impressive 18-6 victory. Despite a pre-game quad strain threatening his participation, Haas defied the odds, having only ten days to recover since his last match with the Broncos. This marked Haas’s 15th Origin appearance, where he showcased remarkable resilience, racking up 156 run metres from 18 carries and completing 30 tackles.
Daley noted that Haas had minimal preparation leading up to the game but still managed to perform exceptionally, illustrating his determination and fitness. The coach praised the team’s medical staff for their outstanding work in getting both Haas and centre Stephen Crichton, who was also carrying an injury, ready for the match. Crichton had reassured the physios on the morning of the game, stating simply that he was “mad” to play.
Crichton, despite battling a groin injury, displayed agility and skill on the field, contributing significantly by assisting in the first try of the match. His ability to evade defenders highlighted his importance to the team, especially given that he had previously worried NSW supporters by limping off during training.
Daley remarked on Haas’s strong showing, despite having limited training and praised the physios for their efforts. The Blues celebrated their second consecutive win at Suncorp Stadium, a feat not achieved since the late 1990s, as they look ahead to clinching the series in Perth’s Optus Stadium on June 18.
Expressing pride in the victory, Haas conveyed how special it was to win at a challenging venue and emphasised the camaraderie within the group, eager to continue their success in the upcoming matches.
