Amid the ongoing flood crisis and clean-up efforts on New South Wales’ Mid North Coast, two individuals have faced charges related to looting.
On Sunday evening around 8.40pm, a 20-year-old man was apprehended by police on Pulteney Street in Taree while reportedly rummaging through property. Law enforcement claims the man was in possession of two hunting knives, several first aid kits, a defibrillator, fishing rods, and additional medical supplies and tools. He has been charged with possession of suspected stolen goods and knife offences, and was denied bail pending his next court appearance on June 10.
Later that night, at approximately 10.40pm, officers conducted a stop and search of a four-wheel drive on Albert Street in Taree. This search revealed personal documents, tools, and a knife inside the vehicle, leading to the arrest of the 29-year-old male driver. He faces charges for possessing suspected stolen items, theft, knife possession, and driving with an expired licence. He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 17.
In response to these incidents, NSW Police have increased patrols in the area as floodwaters recede. Detective Inspector Natalie Antaw emphasised the seriousness of looting during this crisis, reminding the public that taking items not belonging to them, regardless of their condition or location after being displaced by floodwaters, constitutes a criminal offence.
