A violent confrontation unfolded in Melbourne’s CBD during dual protests centred on women’s and transgender rights, leading to two arrests outside Parliament House on Spring Street. The incident began when a rally organised by Women’s Voices Australia protested against the Allan government’s proposed changes to anti-vilification laws aimed at protecting the LGBTIQA+ community. In response, transgender rights activists staged a counter-protest, bringing together over 400 participants.
As tensions escalated between the two groups, police intervened, deploying pepper spray to control the situation. Clashes resulted in physical altercations, with projectiles hurled at officers, leaving four police personnel with non-life-threatening injuries. Ultimately, a 37-year-old woman was arrested for unlawful assault and wilful damage, while a 41-year-old man faced charges of indictable assault on police. Both individuals were released with a summons pending.
The protests saw around 40 demonstrators attempting to disrupt traffic by blocking intersections and engaging with local businesses. Police conducted 38 searches for prohibited items, including face coverings, although no weapons were discovered. Authorities had fortified their presence in anticipation of potential unrest, using water-filled barriers to separate the opposing factions and prevent further escalation.
A police spokesperson reiterated the commitment to safeguarding peaceful protest rights while emphasising a strict approach toward any disruptions that compromise public safety. Victoria Police will review CCTV footage and investigate any additional offences related to the protest violence.
