Morgan Turinui has advised Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt to select Ryan Lonergan in place of Nic White as preparations ramp up for Australia’s upcoming tour to South Africa. The 35-year-old White, who announced his retirement just a week ago, is anticipated to be included in the Rugby Championship squad, especially after an injury to Jake Gordon has created a gap. The Wallabies are set to confront the reigning world champions at Ellis Park on August 17.

Turinui quipped on Stan Sport’s Between Two Posts that White’s return could be memorable, referring to his quick turnaround as akin to "Johnny Farnham" making a comeback tour. While recognising White’s recent performance against the British and Irish Lions, where he nearly earned the man of the match title, Turinui believes it’s an opportune moment to transition to Lonergan, who has been impressively consistent for the ACT Brumbies.

The situation surrounding White is unique; he had just participated in a heartfelt retirement press conference, accompanied by teammates wearing tribute moustaches in a show of solidarity. Despite White’s prior experiences in the role, including a strong showing against the Lions, Turinui questions whether he can continue to muster the emotional energy required after expressing a desire to step back.

Alongside White and Lonergan, Tate McDermott is likely to maintain a role as a strategic substitute for the second half of matches. Schmidt seems to lean towards bolstering the team with experience while balancing the need for fresh talent.

The Wallabies will be under scrutiny as they prepare to face a formidable Springboks side, known for their intensity and depth. Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks’ coach, is not underestimating the Wallabies’ capabilities, suggesting that they will present a well-rounded challenge.

In terms of squad selection, Schmidt indicated White would likely travel with the team, despite the evident potential in Lonergan. As the Wallabies gear up for a pivotal series, including the expected return of playmakers and forwards in response to injuries and match needs, there’s an air of anticipation regarding how this blend of experience and youth will perform against tough opposition.
