After 13 years of leading the Australian cricket team’s anthem, Nathan Lyon has decided to step down from his role as song-master. The veteran spinner, who has been a pivotal part of the team since 2013, announced his decision just days before the upcoming second Test against the West Indies.
Lyon, now 37, has officially named Alex Carey as his successor. Carey had previously taken on the responsibility during Lyon’s absence in the 2023 Ashes series, making him the ideal choice for this honour. Reflecting on his time in the position, Lyon stated it’s “the end of an era” and feels it is time for new energy to be infused into the role.
“I’ve run my race with it. It’s time for someone else to put their touch on it,” Lyon expressed in an interview with cricket.com.au. He took on the song-master role after Mike Hussey retired and has led the team in singing the anthem 67 times throughout his career.
Although he had envisioned transferring the responsibility after the World Test Championship final, Lyon indicated that recent events precipitated his decision. He clarified that stepping down does not imply retirement from cricket; he remains committed to the sport, stating, “I’ve been thinking about it for a while now,” and firmly asserted, “There’s no talk about me retiring.”
Lyon expressed great pride in his long-standing role, highlighting the importance of the team culture and the joy he found in leading the song. In a personal gesture, he shared a handwritten letter with Carey explaining his decision and underscoring his respect for Carey’s approach to the game. This moment was well received, with Lyon noting that Carey was somewhat surprised but appreciative.
As the second Test approaches, the team looks forward to this new chapter under Carey’s leadership in the team song tradition.
