The New South Wales (NSW) government has revealed plans to relax freight weight limits for trucks transporting cargo. Premier Chris Minns highlighted that this adjustment will allow trucks to carry larger loads, thereby decreasing the number of trips needed for transportation.

With the new measures, longer trucks will consume at least 18 per cent less diesel per tonne of payload and will have the capacity to transport 33 per cent more freight. In addition, Minns announced that regulations governing delivery hours will be modified, permitting trucks to operate during extended hours to further optimise fuel savings.

Amid disruptions to global fuel supply caused by conflicts in the Middle East, which are also contributing to rising prices, Minns remarked that these changes are crucial for NSW. “By facilitating larger trucks and longer operating hours, we can efficiently transport more goods throughout the state with fewer journeys and reduced fuel consumption,” he stated.

The government’s approach focuses on proactive measures in collaboration with industry stakeholders to ensure robust supply chains across the state.
