During a recent Air Force One press briefing, US President Donald Trump proposed that Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab nations should accept more Palestinian refugees from the Gaza Strip, suggesting a drastic population displacement to “clean out” the war-torn area. He indicated his intent to create a new beginning for Gaza amidst ongoing conflict, which he described as a “demolition site.”

Additionally, Trump announced the lifting of a ban on sending 2000-pound bombs to Israel, which he justified by stating, “because they bought them,” marking a departure from former President Biden’s restrictions aimed at minimising civilian casualties during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Trump acknowledged the plight of Palestinians amidst the ceasefire and praised Jordan for its acceptance of refugees, expressing a keen interest in improving conditions in Gaza by potentially relocating people and building new housing in more peaceful areas. He remarked on the historical conflicts in Gaza, suggesting that some resettlement could be temporary or permanent, but stressed the urgency for change.

While he envisions a restructured Gaza, the prospect of such mass displacement raises significant concerns about the Palestinian identity deeply rooted in the region. The situation remains complex, with ongoing negotiations concerning the release of hostages and the future of lasting peace in the area.
