During a recent event, Donald Trump discussed the tragic midair collision on January 29, involving an American Airlines flight and a military helicopter near Washington, which resulted in the deaths of all 67 individuals aboard. Initially attributing the incident to diversity hiring initiatives, Trump later shifted the blame to the outdated air traffic control computer system. He asserted that modernising this system is vital, claiming past investments merely patched an obsolete framework rather than replacing it. Trump mentioned that he personally relies on a superior foreign system when flying his private jet, emphasizing the urgent need for technological upgrades.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Elon Musk have promised to expedite improvements to the nation’s aviation safety infrastructure. However, concerns linger about an overstretched and understaffed air traffic control system, a situation exacerbated by factors such as low pay and demanding working conditions. Following the incident, federal reports revealed that air traffic controllers did receive alerts about the convergence of the aircraft and helicopter, but the responses may have failed to prevent the collision, which remains under investigation. Notably, this collision marked the deadliest aviation accident in the US since 2001, raising immediate questions about air traffic safety and staffing adequacy.
