US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States Navy will commence an “immediate” blockade aimed at preventing ships from entering or exiting the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic move follows the termination of peace negotiations with Iran by US officials in Pakistan, with the intent of diminishing Iran’s economic leverage, given that the strait is a critical conduit for 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply.
Trump shared the announcement on his Truth Social platform, stating, “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.” He further instructs the Navy to intercept any vessels in international waters that have previously paid a toll to Iran, asserting, “No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.”
The President highlighted that the underpinning issue of Iran’s nuclear aspirations contributed to the breakdown of peace talks and indicated a readiness to escalate military action, stating, “(A)t an appropriate moment, we are fully ‘LOCKED AND LOADED’, and our Military will finish up the little that is left of Iran!”
These statements reflect a significant shift in US military policy in the region, suggesting a robust approach to deter Iranian influences and protect vital shipping lanes amidst ongoing tensions.
