US President Donald Trump recently announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to initiate negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During a phone conversation following a prisoner exchange, Trump expressed optimism about collaborating closely to halt the war that has resulted in numerous casualties. He highlighted the strengths of both nations and the potential benefits of cooperation.
The agreement comes in the wake of the release of American schoolteacher Marc Fogel, who had been detained in Russia for over three years on drug charges. In exchange, a Russian citizen’s identity remains undisclosed until their arrival back in Russia. Trump emphasised the significance of this diplomatic gesture, stating that it might pave the way for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
Despite the joint announcement, White House officials were vague about Ukraine’s involvement in the negotiations. The Kremlin echoed caution, indicating that the exchange could bolster trust between the two countries. Trump, while celebrating Fogel’s return, hinted that this development could mark the beginning of a more constructive relationship with Russia, which he hopes could lead to the end of hostilities in Ukraine.
