A truck driver has been charged following a significant incident on a major road in New South Wales, where approximately 840 kilograms of metal fragments were spilled, resulting in damage to the tyres of over 300 vehicles. This spill caused extensive traffic delays, with the road remaining closed for nearly ten hours before it was cleared for reopening.
The affected vehicles, many of which suffered tyre damage, were primarily stopped in the breakdown lane. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries from this incident.
According to police, they had discussions with the truck driver on the day of the spill. Investigations revealed that the secondary locking mechanisms on the trailer were not securely engaged, leading to the hazardous spill of metal fragments along a stretch of about 30 kilometres.
The 46-year-old driver has been issued a court attendance notice for operating a heavy vehicle that did not comply with loading regulations. He is scheduled to appear at Hornsby Local Court in July to address the charges.
