A remote Australian territory is set to experience the effects of an intensifying tropical low over the Indian Ocean starting today. The Bureau of Meteorology has reported that Tropical Low 25U is likely to develop into a tropical cyclone while moving south of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, situated approximately 2750 kilometres north-west of Perth.

Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury indicated that while the cyclone poses no threat to the Australian mainland due to its offshore trajectory, it will bring powerful winds and rain with squally showers to the Cocos Islands. The system is expected to drift further south and away from the islands as the week progresses, likely weakening by tomorrow evening.

In addition, a second tropical low, designated as 27U, is also forming off the north-west Kimberley Coast of Western Australia. The Bureau states that this system has a low likelihood of becoming a tropical cyclone between Friday and the weekend, with expectations that it will remain offshore, while still contributing additional rainfall to the Pilbara region over the weekend.

Meanwhile, residents in the already waterlogged Far North Queensland are being warned of more heavy rainfall today. Areas including the regional city of Townsville and the surrounding towns of Ingham and Ayr are likely to experience significant downpours throughout the morning, raising concerns for flash flooding. The Bureau forecasts rainfall amounts between 120mm to 160mm within a six-hour period, with some isolated locations potentially receiving up to 240mm. Conditions in this region should begin to improve by midday.

This weather pattern reflects the unpredictable nature of Australia’s tropical climate, emphasising the need for residents to stay informed and prepared.
