Uncertainty surrounds Tropical Cyclone Alfred’s potential landfall in Queensland, as it intensified overnight to a “severe” category three storm. Currently located approximately 850 kilometres northeast of Mackay and 1000 kilometres from Rockhampton in the Coral Sea, the cyclone has winds reaching up to 130 km/h, with gusts of 185 km/h.

Jonathan How, a senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, indicated a “high confidence” that Alfred will remain largely offshore for at least the next two days. Despite this, he cautioned that various outcomes are still possible, including the cyclone approaching the coast or remaining far out at sea.

Regardless of its ultimate path, residents along the Queensland coast are already experiencing the cyclone’s effects. Strong wind warnings have been issued for areas from Townsville to K’gari, with expectations of large wave conditions measuring between two to three metres, along with a similar easterly swell height. How noted that these conditions could pose dangers for coastal activities like rock fishing.

As the cyclone slowly moves in a south to southeast direction, the situation remains fluid, and officials continue to monitor its progression closely.
