The trial concerning the infamous 2016 robbery of reality star Kim Kardashian commenced in Paris, almost nine years after the incident. This dramatic theft, which occurred during Paris Fashion Week, involved the loss of nearly €15 million (approximately AUD 10 million) in cash and jewellery, including a lavish €6.2 million engagement ring that remains missing.

The proceedings involve ten defendants, aged between 30 and 70, who are charged with serious offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and conspiracy. While eight of them maintain their innocence, two have confessed to lesser charges. Among the accused, Aomar Ait Khedache, widely regarded as the mastermind of the operation, appeared in court using a cane and wearing hearing aids.

The robbery took place just before 3 am at a luxury hotel—No Address—where Kardashian was staying. Disguised as police officers, the assailants forced the concierge at gunpoint to lead them to Kardashian’s apartment, where they restrained her. Court documents indicate that the thieves monitored Kardashian’s social media to plan their attack.

Family members of the defendants were present in court, alongside a significant media contingent. Kardashian is anticipated to testify on May 13, marking her first encounter with the alleged robbers in court. Security measures are expected to be heightened outside the courthouse on that day.

The trial has been postponed multiple times, partly due to other significant legal cases, including the 2015 Paris terror attacks. Originally, there were twelve suspects, but one has passed away, and another has been deemed unfit to stand trial due to Alzheimer’s disease. Should the remaining defendants be convicted, they could face sentences of up to 30 years in prison.

The trial is set to continue until May 22, with a verdict expected on May 23.
