There seems to be no animosity between the Sydney Roosters and Brandon Smith following his transfer to their arch-rivals, the South Sydney Rabbitohs. On Wednesday, South Sydney announced that Smith has signed a two-year contract with them, which is set to commence on November 1. However, there is speculation regarding a potential early release that would allow Smith to join the Rabbitohs this season.

In a recent interview on The Bye Round podcast, Smith indicated his intention to remain with the Roosters for the current season, expressing appreciation for coach Trent Robinson’s support and noting a positive atmosphere within the club. He stated, “I’m happy at the Roosters for this year… there hasn’t been any animosity at the club.” Smith emphasised that any discussions about his release would need to involve club management.

Smith’s impending move has reportedly been in the works for some time, a sentiment echoed by Robinson during a media briefing. Currently sidelined with a lengthy knee injury, Smith’s return is not expected until the latter half of the season, which complicates his potential departure. However, the Roosters have the option to release him before June 30 if they see fit, especially if they feel it would benefit their roster heading into finals contention. Robinson affirmed that the relationship between Smith and the club remains amicable, describing negotiations as “transparent.”

“This switch is a good move for him,” Robinson commented, recognising the opportunity for Smith to advance under Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett while remaining in a familiar area he enjoys. Historically, the Roosters and Rabbitohs have a bitter rivalry, notably fuelled by several high-profile player transfers, such as those involving Angus Crichton and Latrell Mitchell. Smith’s resignation is likely to be regarded as a minor entry in this long-standing saga.

Overall, both Smith and the Roosters appear content with the current arrangement for now, with Smith focused on completing the season with his present club before making a move to South Sydney in due course.
