Qatar Airways has received approval from the Australian government to acquire a 25 per cent stake in Virgin Australia, following recommendations from Treasurer Jim Chalmers and the Foreign Investment Review Board. Both airlines assert that this partnership will enhance flight options for Australians, introducing 28 new weekly return services between Doha and major cities including Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.
Chalmers highlighted that this agreement will bolster competition in the aviation industry, enabling Virgin Australia to expand its capacity on significant international routes. The deal is expected to support job creation in Australia, boost the tourism sector, and reinforce the nation’s position as an essential travel hub.
With the backing of Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia anticipates leveraging the airline’s extensive global experience to compete more effectively in both domestic and international markets. The airline plans to restart long-haul flights in June, offering services from Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth to Doha, with additional routes from Melbourne set to launch in December.
Virgin Australia Group CEO Jayne Hrdlicka expressed optimism, noting that this development marks a significant win for Australian consumers who will enjoy increased travel options and competitive pricing, especially for journeys to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Similarly, Engr Badr Mohammed Al-Mee, the CEO of Qatar Airways Group, affirmed that travellers will benefit from enhanced choices and value through the collaboration.
In a further step towards integration, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recently granted preliminary approval for a strategic alliance between the two airlines, paving the way for a promising future for aviation in Australia.
