Detective Inspector Chris Murray has called for public assistance following the release of new CCTV footage related to a tragic incident in Melbourne where 27-year-old Katie Tangey was killed in a targeted house fire. Murray described the act as despicable, asserting that even seasoned criminals would find it appalling. The police suspect the attackers were aiming for the wrong address, highlighting the dangers stemming from ongoing illicit tobacco disputes.
Tangey, who was housesitting for her brother, called emergency services reporting that she was trapped inside. Unfortunately, she and the family’s golden retriever perished at the scene. Murray emphasized the community loss, saying Tangey was a cherished daughter and friend, and vowed to pursue justice for her family.
Recently released CCTV footage shows two men fleeing the property after allegedly using an accelerant to ignite the fire. An appeal was made for anyone who may have information about the attackers or their vehicle, a dark-coloured SUV, to come forward to Crime Stoppers. The investigation is actively pursuing leads to identify those responsible for this crime, underscoring a commitment to restoring peace and accountability within the community.
