A wave of TikTok videos has captured the attention of viewers worldwide, featuring adventurous influencers speeding across the Sahara atop Mauritania’s Iron Ore Train. These clips depict stunning desert landscapes and curious wildlife, with the influencers’ excitement evident as they experience what many call a "once in a lifetime" journey reminiscent of the sci-fi saga Dune.
However, this exhilarating experience is fraught with risks. Riding on the train—an illegal act—occurs in a country known for its limited tourism, dire safety conditions, and a legacy of slavery. The Australian government has issued warnings against travel to Mauritania, advising citizens to reconsider their plans and highlighting a variety of dangers, including violent crime and terrorism, particularly affecting foreigners.
The Iron Ore Train runs over 700 km from Zouérat to Nouadhibou, typically taking around 20 hours for a one-way trip. While it boasts a dedicated passenger car, many tourists opt to climb atop ore-filled freight cars for the thrill, despite the inherent dangers. In fact, the national railway agency, Société nationale industrielle et minière (SNIM), has attempted to curb this behaviour by prohibiting riding on top of the cargo trains due to safety concerns. Nevertheless, influencers like Isaac Elam continue to showcase their exploits, further romanticising this risky activity.
The stark reality remains that Mauritania is compounded by significant challenges. Though it officially banned slavery in 2007, estimates suggest that around 90,000 individuals are still enslaved today, making it the last nation to outlaw this practice. Additionally, the country adheres to strict religious laws, intensifying the sense of unease surrounding foreign travel.
Elam’s viral videos, released earlier this year, have ignited debate on social media, with critics highlighting the dangers of his actions and the illegality of riding atop the train. Despite invoking fascination, the perilous conditions—including extreme weather and limited access to medical support—make such adventures high-risk. With heavy scrutiny, the allure of Mauritania’s Iron Ore Train persists, yet the Australian government continues to advocate for caution among its citizens regarding travel to this beautiful but hazardous region.
