League icon Cameron Smith has clarified that he hasn’t received any offers to coach the Kangaroos, although he expressed that the position intrigues him. Speculation surrounds Mal Meninga’s potential appointment as the new coach of the Perth Bears, which leaves the Kangaroos’ coaching role open ahead of the Ashes tour.

During his appearance on Nine’s 100% Footy, Smith stated, “no one’s approached me,” yet acknowledged the appeal of coaching the Kangaroos, remarking, “it would gain my interest to coach.” He noted that many have asked him about coaching since his retirement, and he previously dismissed the idea. However, he feels that coaching the Kangaroos, made up of the sport’s elite players, would be a compelling opportunity.

Smith pointed out that the Kangaroos’ commitments usually occur at the end of the year, allowing him to balance coaching duties alongside his commentary work. His name has become part of the conversation surrounding the coaching role along with other notable figures like Kevin Walters and Brad Fittler. Veteran journalist Andrew Webster also mentioned Wayne Bennett in connection with the position.

Phil Gould, another prominent figure in rugby league, commented on Smith’s potential suitability for the role, highlighting his extensive experience from 56 Tests with the Kangaroos. He asserted that while coaching at this level is challenging, having a background in the game is advantageous.

As the search for the new coach continues, the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) aims to have a decision made in time for the upcoming international matches. Smith’s name remains a compelling option for supporters and analysts alike.
