Tom Harley is set to join the AFL as its new Chief Operating Officer following a competitive selection process against Ameet Bains. After spending six successful years with the Sydney Swans, the 46-year-old will depart the club to serve as the deputy to the AFL’s CEO, Andrew Dillon.

Harley, a two-time premiership captain for Geelong in 2007 and 2009, will be formally introduced in his new role on Thursday as reported by Tom Morris from Nine. The appointment marks a significant step in Harley’s career as he takes on responsibilities that include overseeing strategic initiatives, marquee events, and fostering relationships with the clubs. His selection comes after a close contest with Bains, with Harley now positioned as the top contender to eventually succeed Dillon as CEO.

Harley has had an illustrious career in Australian rules football, having played nearly 200 matches for Geelong before retiring in 2009. Following his playing days, he transitioned into an administrative role with the GWS Giants, worked as a broadcaster, and later took on the position of General Manager of Football at the Swans. He has held the role of CEO at the Swans since 2019.

Overall, Harley’s extensive experience, both on and off the field, positions him well for this pivotal role within the AFL.
