Todd Payten, coach of the North Queensland Cowboys, has tempered expectations surrounding Jaxon Purdue’s potential debut in the State of Origin, suggesting it may not be the best move for the young talent at this time. Despite the 19-year-old centre’s impressive performances, including a standout display in a tense 30-30 draw against the Penrith Panthers—where he recorded two linebreak assists, a try assist, and 193 run metres—Payten advises caution.
Purdue’s form has drawn praise from many in the rugby league community, notably Billy Slater, the Queensland coach, who sees great promise in the Mackay native, believing he has a future in representative football. However, when asked about Purdue’s readiness for the upcoming Origin opener, Payten expressed that while Purdue is undoubtedly talented, introducing him to such a high-pressure environment might not be in his best interest for long-term development.
“I can guarantee he’ll play Origin one day, but thrusting him into it now might not be ideal,” Payten stated. While he acknowledged the potential for Purdue to join a training camp during the Origin series, he emphasized a measured approach to his integration into the squad.
Purdue, who has transitioned from playing halfback in the lower grades to centre in the NRL, has made a notable impact this season, scoring seven tries in his first eight games. Cowboys captain Tom Dearden acknowledged Purdue’s quality, referring to him as a “true Queenslander,” but refrained from commenting further on his selection prospects.
With the Cowboys currently in fifth place following their dramatic match against the Panthers, the focus remains on nurturing young talent like Purdue while balancing immediate team needs.
