Charlotte Caslick, an Olympic gold medallist, faces a significant challenge as she aims to participate in the 2025 Rugby World Cup, often doubting her peak performance capability. Despite her struggles, the 30-year-old sevens athlete is committed to overcoming obstacles and joining her Wallaroos teammates in England.

Having just begun to adapt to the 15-a-side game during a recent encounter against the Black Ferns, Caslick sustained a frustrating ankle syndesmosis injury late in the match. Understanding the seriousness of the injury, she has dedicated herself rigorously to her rehabilitation, determined not to abandon her World Cup aspirations.

Despite currently needing a moon boot, Caslick has been selected for Australia’s World Cup squad, with hopes pinned on her readiness for the pool match against the United States on August 31. “I’ll be out of the boot soon,” she shared, optimistic about her recovery, while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead in regaining her form. She’s aiming to start running within the week and is monitoring her progress closely as she approaches her goal.

Wallaroos’ captain Siokapesi Palu is also rehabilitating an ankle injury and shares Caslick’s hopes for a swift return to the field. Australia is set to begin their campaign against Samoa on August 23.

Caslick emphasised the importance of reconditioning her entire right leg after extended periods of non-weight bearing, which can impact overall fitness. Among the squad, she is one of two sevens players selected, alongside emerging talent Tia Hinds, while others, like 2024 world player of the year Maddison Levi, have stepped back from the selection process due to concerns about time constraints in preparation.

Caslick acknowledged Levi’s talents and stressed the importance of having the right support and timing in a competitive environment. She is confident in the skills of her current teammates and remains hopeful for the future opportunities to include talents like Levi within the Wallaroos setup.

As the Wallaroos gear up for their matches, including key fixtures against the USA and England, anticipation builds. Caslick’s determination and resilience will be pivotal as she seeks to make her mark at one of the sport’s most prestigious events.
