Andrew Johns has announced his new role on the Kangaroos selection panel, expressing enthusiasm to share ideas in preparation for the upcoming Ashes series. Widely regarded as one of rugby league’s all-time greats, he will work alongside notables such as Boyd Cordner, Darren Lockyer, Cameron Smith, and ARLC chairman Peter V’landys.

Despite his lack of full-time coaching experience at an elite level, Johns has previously contributed to various clubs and closely collaborated with the NSW Blues until two years ago. Known as the greatest halfback in league history, he is now tasked with selecting the best players for the Australian team, which will wear the iconic green and gold when they visit England later this year.

In his confirmation on Nine’s “Freddy and The Eighth,” Johns stated that while the selection process largely self-manages, he is eager to present ideas, especially about younger players he believes should be included in the tour squad. “When I’m watching, I keep an eye on the younger talents and their performances,” he noted. He aims to introduce young players to the rigours of international competition before they officially make the team, helping them acclimatise to the demands of camp and the intensity of matches.

Johns revealed that he was approached for the selector position prior to Mal Meninga’s resignation and jokingly remarked about the changes in leadership and how he might fit in under the new regime, expected to be led by his close friend Brad Fittler.

While the appointment of Fittler seems imminent, Johns refrained from confirming specifics but acknowledged the speculation surrounding it. He expressed enthusiasm about the potential of having Fittler and Smith collaborate in coaching roles, declaring, “I’d love to see the dream team come together.”

As Johns steps into this significant role, there is palpable excitement surrounding how his vast experience and insights will influence the Kangaroos’ path as they approach a crucial series.
