Experts are cautioning Australians against using newly marketed tanning devices known as collariums, which are presented as safer alternatives to banned solariums. Despite claims that collariums use less harmful UVA radiation, experts assert they still carry significant risks, including increased chances of melanoma and other skin cancers. Dr. Joseph Scott from the University of the Sunshine Coast emphasised the dangers, particularly for young people with thinner skin, which is more vulnerable to UV damage.

Commercial solariums have been prohibited across Australia since 2016, due to their classification as grade one carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Queensland Health is currently investigating collariums, warning businesses of potential fines for violating regulations regarding banned radiation sources.

Professor Marion Eckert highlighted that while UVA radiation may reduce immediate sunburn risk, it can still penetrate deeply and cause long-term skin damage. The exaggerated claims surrounding the benefits of collagen production from UV exposure could further distort public perception.

As skin cancer rates continue to rise, with a death occurring every six hours in Australia, health experts urge strict regulation of these devices. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency is also reviewing potential loopholes in regulations. Health professionals advocate for the immediate enforcement of bans on indoor tanning to protect public health.
