Residents of Flinders, Point Leo, and Shoreham in Victoria have been urged to boil their tap water following the discovery of a deceased rodent in the Shoreham Reservoir during routine maintenance. The emergency alert was issued shortly before midnight AEDT, advising locals to take precautionary measures while water testing and investigations are conducted.

Authorities have stressed that the boiling advice extends not only to drinking water but also applies to water used for pets, livestock, food preparation, cleaning fruits and vegetables, ice-making, and oral hygiene. They highlighted that while the presence of E. coli itself may not be inherently dangerous, it indicates potential contamination with other harmful microbes, which can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea and cramps.

The warning specifically mentions that certain groups, including infants, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to waterborne illnesses. Residents are advised to avoid unboiled water to prevent any health risks associated with its consumption.

For those seeking immediate alternatives, bottled water has been confirmed as a safe option. Additionally, residents can access clean drinking water at local community facilities, including Flinders Civic Hall and Shoreham Recreation Reserve.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with further updates slated for 5pm AEDT or sooner if circumstances change. As the situation develops, it is anticipated that local supplies and stocks could be disrupted. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to safety recommendations to safeguard their health.
