Sydney embraced a vibrant celebration during the 47th annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade, with massive crowds gathering to witness the spectacle. Hundreds of thousands of attendees from various parts of Australia came together to enjoy over 10,000 participants and 180 dazzling floats, showcasing an atmosphere filled with colour and creativity.

The festivities commenced at 7pm, starting from Hyde Park and winding through Oxford Street, Taylor Square, Flinders Street, before concluding at Anzac Parade in Moore Park. As the night unfolded, it was anticipated that the parade would wrap up around 11pm, yet for many attendees, the evening’s excitement was just beginning, with numerous after-parties scheduled throughout Sydney.

In keeping with tradition, the parade was led by the iconic “Dykes on Bikes”, heralding a night of inclusivity and celebration of LGBTQIA+ culture. Participants were seen in the marshalling area putting the finishing touches on their elaborate make-up designs, all while a sea of colourful costumes, speedos, and lycra filled the streets, adding to the jubilant atmosphere.

This year’s theme, “Free To Be,” symbolises the ongoing progress toward LGBTQIA+ equality and acceptance. Spectators were keen to secure prime spots to watch the beautifully artistic floats pass by, embodying both the spirit and resilience of the community.

From the anticipation of the parade’s kick-off to the electric energy of post-parade parties, Sydney’s Mardi Gras remains a landmark event, embraced not only by the LGBTQIA+ community but by all who support love, diversity, and equality.
