On the NSW Central Coast, hundreds gathered today along the Gosford foreshore to protest against violence towards women. The rally aimed to raise awareness and demand increased funding for related services, education, and advocacy efforts. Participants highlighted the pressing issue of gender-based violence, with a tragic statistic revealing that 24 women have lost their lives to violence in Australia this year alone.
Attendees were particularly motivated by the recent murder of local woman Audrey Griffin, prompting calls for political leaders at all levels to prioritise action rather than ignorance. Local resident Scarlett Owens emphasised the need for urgent political intervention, while Gordan Reid, the Member of Parliament for Robertson, affirmed that political representatives are collaborating with the local council to push for government action to address this pervasive societal issue.
The rally took place amidst ongoing discussions surrounding the death of 53-year-old Torrens, who was serving a community corrections order for breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) at the time of Griffin’s murder. His passing under suspicious circumstances in Silverwater Correctional Complex has been characterised as “bittersweet” by Griffin’s family.
Participants at the rally carried banners and chanted slogans, united in their message against violence. This demonstration reflects a growing commitment within the community to address and combat gendered violence in society.
