Father’s and Mother’s Days, while meant to celebrate parenthood, can bring a sense of isolation and sadness for many. Not everyone has idyllic memories of their parents. For those who have endured childhoods marked by absence, neglect, or abuse, the supposed joy these days bring can be overwhelming.

Although many cherish their relationships with their parents and commemorate them on these occasions, it’s vital to recognise that some individuals may wish for a different kind of memory—one untouched by pain and longing. This Sunday, as heartfelt images of joyful families flood social media, it’s essential to consider those who feel a sense of loss or disconnection on such days.

Reflecting on my own Father’s Day experiences, I will undoubtedly think of my gentle father, who passed away seventeen years ago, along with the many imperfect father figures present in our lives. Inspired by the themes in Donal Ryan’s poignant novel, The Spinning Heart, which explores the complex relationships between fathers and sons, this year I find myself contemplating not only my father but also the many mentors who have influenced my children’s lives.

Father’s Day serves as a reminder of the significant roles that aunts, uncles, and other caregivers play. They may not share our bloodline, yet their love and wisdom can deeply nurture and guide us. These relationships create a rich tapestry of support, fostering resilience and connection in our lives.

As I celebrate or receive well-wishes on Father’s Day, I intend to appreciate not only the biological connections but also the enduring influences of those who extend beyond traditional family roles. These figures, whether mentors, friends, or simply people who have offered guidance, greatly enrich our lives.

As we approach Father’s Day, let’s extend our gratitude to all those who have provided love and support in various forms. These emotional connections, fostered by those who may not be our biological parents, shape our lives significantly and deserve recognition. They create a remarkable network of influence that contributes to our well-being and happiness, and they should be celebrated just as fervently.
