Thirty-five Hostages Found Dead in Nigeria Following Ransom Payment

In a tragic incident in Nigeria, at least 35 individuals lost their lives following a kidnapping event, even though ransoms were negotiated for their release. The abductors had initially demanded one million naira (approximately $1,000) per person taken hostage.

This kidnapping is part of a disturbing trend in the region where criminal gangs resort to such acts as a way to generate income. In this particular case, 56 people were abducted from a village in northern Zamfara, leading to the deaths of 35 captives, while 16 others managed to escape. Local government official Manniru Haidara Kaura lamented that the victims were mostly young individuals who met a horrific fate, described as being “slaughtered like rams.”

Despite the ransom being paid after negotiations, the gunmen decided to execute their captives, releasing only a small number, which included 17 women and one young boy. Haidara condemned the actions of the kidnappers, characterising them as “senseless and heartless” for killing their fellow countrymen.

In response to the escalating crisis of abductions for ransom, Nigerian authorities enacted a law in 2022, criminalising ransom payments. This law imposes a severe penalty, including a potential 15-year prison sentence for those involved in making such payments. However, it is noteworthy that no arrests have been made under this legislation to date.

The situation continues to raise alarm among citizens, as these criminal activities not only pose a direct threat to safety but also highlight the broader issues of insecurity and law enforcement challenges in the region.
