Andrew Johns has expressed concern about the increasing workload of key players at Penrith, especially following their recent unexpected defeat against the Roosters. This loss was compounded by a groin injury suffered by fullback Dylan Edwards, who left the field in noticeable distress during the second half. Subsequent scans confirmed that Edwards has sustained a strain, which could sideline him for up to three weeks.

Johns, speaking on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, emphasised the seriousness of groin injuries, drawing from his own experiences. He noted that such injuries can take a long time to heal, often lingering for 12 to 18 months. Observing Edwards’ struggle as he exited the field, Johns acknowledged that it doesn’t bode well and pointed out how Edwards appeared to be gripping his groin area.

Edwards has had an illustrious career, being part of Penrith’s four consecutive premiership wins and representing state and country. Nonetheless, Johns raised alarms about the considerable pressure on the club’s star players, including Edwards, Isaah Yeo, Nathan Cleary, and Liam Martin. He suggested that the burden of competing in Origins, semi-finals, and international tours might take a toll, highlighting that athletes are not indestructible.

Last season, for instance, Cleary struggled with injuries, being limited to just 13 games, while Martin had off-season surgery and has faced multiple health challenges throughout his career. With the pressure mounting, the team’s coach, Ivan Cleary, may soon need to address the potential long-term impacts of such physical demands.

Looking ahead, Penrith faces a crucial matchup in round three against the Melbourne Storm, a rematch of the previous year’s grand final, and they will be hoping for a rejuvenated squad to turn their fortunes around.
