Pope Francis has developed pneumonia in both lungs, as confirmed by the Vatican following new medical evaluations. The 88-year-old Pontiff is also experiencing asthmatic bronchitis, necessitating cortisone antibiotic treatment. His condition, deemed complex by the Vatican, derives from a polymicrobial respiratory infection caused by various viruses and bacteria.

Admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital in ‘fair’ condition after bronchitis worsened, the Pope recently underwent a chest CT scan that revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, requiring additional medication. Despite his health issues—compounded by the removal of the upper lobe of his right lung in youth—Francis remains in good spirits, expressing gratitude for the prayers directed towards his recovery.

As of now, he is not on supplemental oxygen and has been able to eat, read the news, and conduct some work from his hospital bed. However, the Vatican has indicated that a lengthened hospital stay is necessary due to the complexity of his condition, which has already resulted in two changes to his treatment plan. His health concerns have led to the cancellation of scheduled Vatican events, including this Wednesday’s general audience, and could affect the upcoming Holy Year ceremonies that draw millions of pilgrims to Rome.
